History

In 1979 Bill Wolff approached me to join with him to provide some counseling services up in Port Washington. Apparently a good friend of his, Chuck Englehardt, had asked him to come up. Chuck was head of the Washington County Council on Alcoholism.

Bill felt he was a bit too "uncredentialled" and wanted someone with him who had a bit more of a professional background. In knew Bill from AA. Bill was, at the time, a full time counselor at the Dewy Center in Milwaukee. I was a scholl social worker in Brown Deer. We teamed up and became Human Services Associates (HSA).

Actually, I think Bill and I were both a bit scared and never would have ventured out without the support of the other. So up we went to Port in 79, while we both had full time jobs, and rented an office in a wonderful house on the main street. We had the whole bottom of the house. We were and immediate modest success, as Chuck sent us a steady supply of clients for our part time practice.

One day in May 1980 there was a knock at the back door of the office in Port. It was Gretchen Fincke. Chuck had sent her over. She was looking for a place to set up a practice and Chuck suggested us. She joined that day. Bill soon left Dewey and was up at Port full time.

Sometime in 1981, a Charles Trimberger called me and was wondering what ever happened to me. He had been getting referrals from me when I was a social worker in Brown Deer. I replied that I had moved on to DePaul but had just left DePaul. He was interested in us teaming up with him as the Addictions branch of his clinic, Charles Trimberger, and Assoc. This would allow us to access insurance reimbursement. The three of us did, but also kept the office in Port.

About a year into this arrangement, Bill and I decided to break away and open our own licensed clinic which we did in 1982 on 76th and Capitol Dr. To my knowledge, Human Services Associated was the first free standing addictions clinic in Wisconsin, While First Step in Waukesha opened about this time, Bill and I had been operating as HSA since 1979 but were first licensed independently in 1982.

What made us so successful is that Mothers Against Drunk Drivers was taking over the country and the Adelman Bill had just been past in Wisconsin. We had a friend working at the Milwaukee Council on Alcoholism which became inundated with drunk driving clients. He sent them all to us! We sort of went from 10 to 200 clients in less than 30 days.
